Friends of Transit Thanks Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon for his
dedication to transit
On November 14, 2011, Friends of Transit and METRO Light Rail
hosted an event to thank Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon for being a
friend of transit. At the event, we unveiled a train wrap in
Mayor Gordon's honor that will run through the end of 2011. The
photos below are from the unveiling event.
Mayor Gordon's dedication and passion for transit date back long
before he took the oath of office to be Mayor in January 2003.
His passion dates back before he helped shape the successful
Transit 2000 vote, or before 1998 when he became a City
Councilman for District 4, or before being a Chief of Staff to
the previous Mayor. His passion for transit dates back several
decades - LONG before it was fashionable to be a Friend of
Transit.
While Mayor Gordon's track record and history to fight for
transit is significant in and of itself, but what has really
made his vision and leadership stand out is not just in getting
transit, but about what it can do to transform our region. He
has often talked about how transit is changing the face of
Phoenix (and the region) and how we need to capitalize on
transit oriented development and to embrace it as a way to get
people to their jobs, and so much more. Mayor Gordon has not
only fought to get transit, but he has challenged us to embrace
it, and to use it to our community a better place to live work
and play.
And lastly, he has challenged Friends of Transit to do more, to
dream big and to be courageous to push forward with new ideas,
including our Friends of Transit Tuesdays program that many of
you will remember. We were honored to present Mayor Gordon with
the 9th Annual Friend of Transit award at our Annual Conference
several months ago, and are honored once again to present this
train wrap in appreciation of all he has done for transit.
