The Friends of Transit Tuesdays program sponsored a weekly discount offer each Tuesday for a different restaurant along the light rail route to encourage people to “shop the line.” In addition, the organization held a prize drawing at the weekly featured restaurant with prizes purchased from other businesses along the route as an incentive to attract new customers to those businesses, as well.

Friends of Transit underwrote the cost of the discount for each of the featured businesses and oversaw all marketing and promotion for the Friends of Transit Tuesdays program. The program, which kicked off May 22, 2007 and ran through April 29, 2008, was a tremendous success, with crowds of customers lining up for Friends of Transit Tuesdays’ lunch promotions on the light rail line throughout Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa.

With these weekly lunches and drawings, plus a few evening mixers and sponsorship of other events on the light rail line, Friends of Transit Tuesdays assisted over 150 different businesses along the light rail route. Over 3,000 people attended the lunch events alone, and almost 1,500 people entered into the weekly prize drawings.
