Subject: Weekend Closures & Restrictions on Valley Freeways Weekend of September 5 ~ 8 Date: Thursday, September 04, 2008 6:01 PM Weekend Closures & Restrictions on Valley Freeways Weekend of September 5 ~ 8 Several projects to add new lanes and make other improvements along Phoenix area freeways will require closures or lane restrictions this weekend (September 5-8). The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) recommends drivers use alternate routes and allow extra travel time while the following restrictions are in place: * Northbound I-17 closed between Dunlap Avenue and Thunderbird Road from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (September 8) to prepare for rubberized asphalt paving. DETOUR: Drivers are strongly encouraged to use alternate routes to avoid delays. Traffic will detour along freeway frontage roads. Drivers should consider other freeways to avoid the closure, in addition to 19th and 35th avenues. Project benefit: A one-inch layer of rubberized asphalt is installed to provide a quieter and smoother ride for the traveling public. Generally, rubberized asphalt needs to be replaced every 10 years. * Westbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) closed between Hayden Road and Tatum Boulevard from 1 a.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday (September 8) for carpool lane construction. DETOUR: Drivers should use Cactus Road to State Route 51 or another freeway alternative to avoid congestion. Project benefit: This project marks the final segment of Loop 101 HOV lanes under construction. The Tatum Boulevard to Princess Drive segment will connect 38 miles of continuous carpool lanes when complete next year. * Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) closed at Camelback Road for rubberized asphalt paving. The southbound lanes will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday to 8 p.m. Saturday (September 6). Northbound lanes will be closed from 9 p.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday (September 8). DETOUR: Traffic must exit at Camelback Road, then use 91st or 99th avenues to re-enter the freeway at Bethany Home or Thomas roads. * Southbound I-17 closed at Happy Valley Road from 11 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday (September 6) and 11 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday (September 7) for installation of a concrete conveyor system for the freeway widening work. DETOUR: Traffic will exit and re-enter the freeway using the Happy Valley Road roundabout. * Southbound I-17 narrowed to one lane at Carefree Highway (State Route 74) from 9 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday (September 8) for ongoing bridge work. There will also be temporary ramp closures at the interchange. DETOUR: During ramp closures, drivers can use interchanges at Happy Valley or Pioneer roads.
