Subject: Weekend Freeway Restrictions in Phoenix Area (June 6-9) Date: Thursday, June 05, 2008 5:34 PM Weekend Freeway Restrictions in Phoenix Area (June 6-9) Most restrictions to take place during overnight hours Several improvement projects to add lanes and improve access along Valley freeways will require restrictions in the Phoenix area this weekend (June 6-9). The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) recommends drivers allow for extra travel time while the following restrictions are in place: * Eastbound US 60 (Superstition Freeway) closed overnight between I-10 and Priest Drive from 10 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday (June 8) for overhead sign work. DETOUR: Drivers can take northbound State Route 143 to eastbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) or use surface streets to get around the closure. Project benefit: ADOT regularly maintains freeways and overhead signs to ensure continued safety and an efficient ride for the traveling public. * Northbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) closed at Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) from 12:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. Saturday (June 7) for sign installation as part of the HOV-lane project. Eastbound Loop 202 ramp to northbound Loop 101 also closed. DETOUR: Traffic will be detoured to McClintock Drive and will proceed north to McKellips Road to re-enter northbound Loop 101. Project benefit: ADOT is installing 15 miles of carpool lanes from Princess Drive to the Loop 202 interchange in Scottsdale. The project will be complete next year. * Southbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) closed at McDowell Road from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday (June 7) for sign installation as part of the HOV-lane project. DETOUR: Traffic will exit at the McDowell Road off-ramp and re-enter the freeway at the McDowell Road on-ramp. Project benefit: The 15 miles of carpool lanes will offer the traveling public a multimodal system of transportation choices. * Southbound I-17 closed overnight between Happy Valley and Pinnacle Peak roads from 10 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday (June 8) to install temporary concrete barriers. DETOUR: Drivers will exit at Happy Valley Road and detour south on 29th Avenue to re-enter the freeway at Pinnacle Peak Road. Project benefit: ADOT is adding new lanes and interchanges along I-17 from Loop 101 to the Carefree Highway (State Route 74) to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion. The project is expected to be complete in 2009. * I-17 narrowed overnight to one lane in each direction between Jomax Road and Carefree Highway (State Route 74) from 9 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday (June 7) to stripe the freeway and relocate temporary concrete barriers for the ongoing widening project. DETOUR: Drivers should expect delays and are encouraged to plan for extra travel time. Project benefit: This widening project is part of the 20-year Regional Transportation Plan, funded by the one-half cent sales tax approved by voters in 2004. * Eastbound I-10 (Papago Freeway) narrowed overnight to one lane at Estrella/Pebble Creek Parkway from 9 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Saturday (June 7) for bridge work. Estrella/Pebble Creek Parkway under the freeway also closed. DETOUR: Drivers are encouraged to plan for extra travel time. Surface street traffic can use Cotton Lane or Bullard Avenue as an alternate route. Project benefit: ADOT is widening I-10 in the West Valley with two additional lanes in both directions from Loop 101 to Verrado Way. The project is expected to be complete in 2010.
