Subject: Weekend Freeway Restrictions in Phoenix Area (May 2-5); Date: Thursday, May 01, 2008 10:41 PM Weekend Freeway Restrictions in Phoenix Area (May 2-5); Westbound I-10 Closure Affects Drivers Heading from Tucson to Phoenix Several improvement projects to add lanes, rubberized asphalt paving and improve access on Valley freeways will require roadway restrictions in the Phoenix area this weekend (May 2-5). The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) recommends drivers allow for extra travel time while the following restrictions are in place: * Westbound I-10 closed between Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) and Ray Road from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (May 5) for rubberized asphalt paving. Loop 202 ramps to westbound I-10 also closed. DETOUR: Westbound I-10 traffic detoured to eastbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway), then north on Loop 101 (Price Freeway) and west on US 60 (Superstition Freeway) to reconnect with westbound I-10. Drivers should plan for extra travel time. Project benefit: Rubberized asphalt on Valley freeways creates a smoother and quieter ride for drivers and benefits the community. * Eastbound I-10 narrowed to one lane between 27th and 19th avenues from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (May 5) for pavement repair. DETOUR: Drivers encouraged to use other interchanges to access I-10. Project benefit: A well-maintained freeway provides a safer, smoother ride for drivers, while extending the life of the roadway. * I-10 narrowed overnight to one lane in both directions between Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) and Avondale Boulevard from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday (May 3) for barrier wall placement. DETOUR: Drivers encouraged to plan for extra travel time and be prepared to merge safely in work zone. Project benefit: ADOT is adding two new lanes in both directions along this section of I-10 to improve traffic flow. * I-17 narrowed overnight to one lane in each direction at Deer Valley Road from 10 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday (May 4) for bridge work. Deer Valley Road will also be closed at I-17. DETOUR: Eastbound Deer Valley Road traffic will be detoured onto frontage road south to Rose Garden Lane. Westbound Deer Valley Road traffic will be detoured north to Pinnacle Peak Road. Project benefit: ADOT is adding new lanes and interchanges along this section of I-17 to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion. The project will be complete in 2009. * Northbound State Route 143 (Hohokam Expressway) closed between I-10 and Loop 202 from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (May 5) for bridge maintenance. Northbound on-ramp at University Drive also closed. DETOUR: For access to Sky Harbor Airport, use I-10 to Buckeye Road. Drivers can also use local streets for alternate routes. Project benefit: ADOT regularly maintains bridges around Arizona to ensure continued safety and to maximize a smooth ride for drivers.
