Scottsdale
Resort Trolley adds to route
10 sites
now feed guests into downtown district
Mike Sakal
East Valley
Tribune
Feb. 25, 2008
More aboard!
In its third year of providing free rides for passengers
leaving Scottsdale resorts and heading into the city’s
downtown shopping district, Scottsdale’s Resort Trolley
service has more resorts on its route.
During the 2008 heavy tourist season, the Scottsdale Resort
Trolley is picking up passengers at 10 resorts throughout
the city from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and shuttling them to
Scottsdale Fashion Square.
On Thursdays, the trolley service’s hours are extended until
9:15 p.m. for the ArtWalks through the downtown gallery
district.
From there, tourists and residents who wish to be picked up
from resorts in their neighborhoods can hitch a ride on the
Downtown Trolley and head into Old Town’s shopping and
gallery district.
The Resort Trolley rides will last through April 27.
“It’s not a charter, it’s a route we provide seasonally,”
said Amy Foerster, city transit manager. “People who want to
use the trolley won’t have to use their cars as much, and it
will cut down on the use of gas and traffic congestion in
the downtown area.”
The Resort Trolley’s pickup loop begins at the Marriott
Camelback Inn, 5402 E. Lincoln Drive, at 9:01 a.m., and the
latest morning pickup for passengers is at 10:36 a.m. at the
Renaissance Scottsdale Resort at 6160 N. Scottsdale Road,
according to the schedule.
Other resorts participating in this year’s Resort Trolley
route are the Scottsdale Plaza Resort, Millennium Resort of
Scottsdale, Scottsdale Resort and Conference Center, Gainey
Suites Hotel, Hyatt Regency Scottsdale at Gainey Ranch, the
Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain, Hotel Scottsdale and
Chaparral Suites.
Last year, the Resort Trolley had to cut back its services
to nine resorts and carried 5,153 passengers for the season,
according to Jim McIntyre, spokesman for the city’s
transportation department.
Comparably, during the 2006 tourist season, the first year
of the Resort Trolley, which was a pilot program, 11 resorts
participated in the program and there were 6,793 passengers,
McIntyre said.
“This says a lot,” Foerster said. “The service the resorts
are requesting from us speaks volumes.”
The city does not incur any cost for running the trolley,
but the resorts participating on the route and Fashion
Square each pay a fee for its use in the tourist season,
Foerster said.
The estimated amount it costs to run the trolley per tourist
season was not available.
