Valley Metro
Fares Change on Dec. 1
PHOENIX (Nov. 8, 2007) –
Beginning Saturday, Dec. 1 Valley Metro, the regional
transit system, will be making changes to its bus fares.
The one-ride full fare remains at $1.25, although transfer
slips will no longer be available. Instead, Valley Metro
passengers will be able to experience the convenience of
purchasing All Day passes for $2.50 each on board all buses
beginning Dec. 1.
The pass, which can be purchased from new fareboxes, will
allow passengers to ride all day on a single fare without
the hassles of transfer slips. The passes will also allow
riders to transfer to and from the METRO light rail system
when it begins operation in Dec. 2008.
The new 31-Day pass, which replaces the monthly pass, has
increased in price from $34.00 for local service to $45.00.
The Express/RAPID bus 31-Day pass changes from $51.00 to a
new price of $68.00. The 3, 7, and 31 Day passes are
activated on the first day of use and are valid for
consecutive days.
“Valley Metro has not had a fare increase in more than 10
years despite increased operational costs,” said David A.
Boggs, Regional Public Transportation Authority executive
director. “Providing effective service for residents is
vital, especially as the Valley continues its record pace in
population growth.”
Tickets and tokens will no longer be accepted as fare
effective Dec. 1 and can be exchanged for new fare types at
transit centers that sell fares. Exchanges will be available
until February 29, 2008.
Transfer slips, which allow passengers to transfer between
bus routes at no additional cost, are also being eliminated
from the fare system. The current transfer slips have
specific use and time limitations that will no longer be a
concern with the day passes. The All Day passes can be
purchased from the farebox and are used to transfer from bus
to bus between 4:30 a.m. until 2:30 a.m. the next day.
Fares can be purchased online, through the mail, at transit
centers and retail locations or on the bus (All Day passes
only). Passengers can begin purchasing the new fares after
Nov. 15, 2007 at transit centers or online at
www.ValleyMetro.org.
