Chocolate shop opens amid light-rail construction
Alison Stanton
The Arizona Republic
November 5, 2007
The light rail construction has forced several downtown
Phoenix businesses to close.
But last month, a new shop opened right in the heart of
construction, and its owners and customers couldn't be
happier to be there.
Chatham's Fine Chocolates moved from its popular Scottsdale
location to 114 W. Camelback Road. Phoenix residents Chatham
and Jennie Kitz opened the chocolate boutique two years ago
as a way to share their love of great chocolate with others.
The shop features individual chocolate pieces from more than
a dozen chocolatiers, as well as an assortment of chocolate
bars, syrups and other delicious products.
Chatham explained the couple's decision to move into an area
that is currently challenged by construction.
"We're Phoenix people. My wife grew up here and I went to
Sunnyslope high school," he said. "We wanted to be part of
Phoenix's rebirth."
The couple lives close by, so Chatham said he plans on
buying a bicycle soon so he can ride to work.
Chatham, whose current favorite chocolate is the Lillie
Belle Farms marzipan fig truffle, made with "rum and
spice-poached figs, wrapped in marzipan, dipped in chocolate
and rolled in almonds," said that business in the new
location has been brisk.
"We've had a lot of our old customers follow us, and we've
gotten a bunch of new ones too. People keep saying 'I'm so
glad you're here because we don't have to drive to
Scottsdale anymore.'"
