Valley Metro Vanpool Program Sets Record with 300th Van

PHOENIX (August 29, 2006) - On Thursday, August 31, Valley Metro made
history as the vanpool program handed over the keys of three commuter
vans to employees of AmSafe.  The start-up of the three new vans takes
the program to the highest number of vanpools in service--at 300--for
Valley Metro.  The transit agency has been providing commuter vanpools
since 1992.

There are 40 AmSafe employees who will be using the new vanpools for
their commutes from Gold Canyon, Apache Junction, Mesa, Chandler and
Tempe to their Phoenix-based employer.

"This is an incredible milestone for all commuters. Vanpools take cars
off the roads, which helps reduce congestion and pollution," said Dave
Boggs, Executive Director of Valley Metro RPTA, the agency that manages
one of the country's fastest growing programs. "Each day there are 3,000
commuters who are saving time, money and stress because they are riding
in Valley Metro vanpools to work."

The savings is significant in several aspects. A passenger in a
15-person vanpool van pays about $28 per month in fuel costs for
traveling 1,500 miles. A drive-alone commuter pays about 

$252 per month in fuel costs alone.  The average fare paid for a vanpool
commuter is about $81 per month, not including an employer subsidy that
many trip reduction employers provide. Besides saving money, vanpoolers
help save the environment. In July alone, more than 3.5 million miles
were not traveled saving more than 122,000 pounds of pollution from
being emitted.

Anyone who lives or works in Maricopa County can drive or ride in a
Valley Metro vanpool van. It takes just six people to start a vanpool.
The monthly cost is based upon the number of miles the van travels.
