Watch out for weekend freeway closures in the Phoenix area (Oct. 14-17)
Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes to avoid freeway closures needed for improvement projects this weekend (Oct. 14-17). The following restrictions will be in place:
* The southbound Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) in the West Valley will be closed between Glendale Avenue and Indian School Road from 4 a.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday (Oct. 17) while crews resurface the freeway with quieter rubberized asphalt. Through traffic can exit the freeway at Northern or Glendale avenues and go south on 99th Avenue before returning to the Loop 101 beyond the closure at Indian School Road. Here's a special alert: Southbound Loop 101 drivers heading to events at Glendale Arena, including Saturday night's Coyotes-Red Wings game, are encouraged to exit the freeway at Olive Avenue and use southbound 91st Avenue to reach the arena.
* Eastbound Interstate 10 will be closed between 16th and Washington streets (east of the Deck Park Tunnel) from 10 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 15). Crews will be replacing overhead signs along the freeway. Eastbound I-10 traffic will exit the freeway at 16th St., go south on 16th St. to eastbound Jefferson Street to return to I-10. Eastbound I-10 drivers also should consider using southbound I-17 (at the Stack interchange) as an alternate route to avoid the closure. The eastbound I-10 ramps to northbound State Route 51 and eastbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) also will be closed. Drivers who normally use those ramps are encouraged to exit eastbound I-10 ahead of the closure at 16th St. (at 7th Ave. or 7th St.), go north and use eastbound McDowell Road as an alternate route to reach SR 51 or connect with the Loop 202 via 24th Street.
* Westbound Interstate 10 will be closed at US 60 (Superstition Freeway) from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Wednesday nights (Oct. 16-19) for overhead sign installation work. Westbound I-10 traffic will be detoured to eastbound US 60, exit at Rural Road and turn around at the interchange to use westbound US 60 to reconnect with I-10. Drivers also are encouraged to exit ahead of US 60 and use other alternate routes to travel beyond the closure.
