Transit
plan calls for tax OKPima County looks for voter approval
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS -
Tucson’s transportation future will include widened roads and expanded bus service but no light rail or new cross-town freeway if a proposed new plan passes muster with voters.
Pima County voters will likely need to endorse a half-cent countywide sales tax to pay for the sweeping, $1.9 billion plan released Thursday.
The draft, which will be subjected to public comment, shows that about two-thirds of the money would be spent on road improvements, with the remainder going toward new buses, bike lanes, pedestrian walkways and an electric streetcar running between University Medical Center and downtown Tucson.
The plan calls for 15 corridor enhancements including transit , road, pedestrian and bicycle improvements affecting all four directions through the region.
Among them will be ‘‘desert parkways’’ along Valencia, Houghton and Tangerine roads and La Cholla Boulevard.
Grant Road would be widened to six lanes between Oracle and Swan roads.
Members of the Regional Transportation Authority say that after months of meetings and hours of discussion they are ready to open their proposals to public scrutiny.
