ADOT to host celebration Saturday (June 11) on newest section of Loop 202 Santan Freeway in Chandler
Bring your bikes, roller blades or walking shoes out to the Valley's newest section of freeway Saturday morning (June 11) when ADOT hosts a party on the Loop 202 Santan Freeway between Dobson Road and Arizona Avenue in Chandler.
Governor Janet Napolitano, ADOT Director Victor Mendez and Chandler Mayor Boyd Dunn will be on hand for the "Surfin' on the Santan" event from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. (noon). ADOT and the City of Chandler are co-sponsoring the event, which also will feature entertainment and giveaways from community groups and local businesses. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will start at 10 a.m.
Free parking is available by entering the westbound Loop 202 from Arizona Avenue, south of Chandler Boulevard. Police officers will be on hand to help direct traffic into the event.
The two and a half mile stretch of the Santan Freeway between Dobson Road and Arizona Avenue is scheduled to open to traffic on Monday, June 20. The opening also will provide drivers with access to the east half of the interchange with the Price Freeway (Loop 101).
"We're looking forward to another milestone in the advancement of the region's transportation system," said Director Mendez. "Saturday's celebration will allow local residents to get a closer look at the project before crews put the finishing touches on it."
Edward Kraemer and Sons is the prime contractor on the $32 million Santan Freeway project between Dobson and Arizona Avenue. The company is among the groups providing free refreshments, including bottled water, at Saturday's events. Those attending are encouraged to wear light clothing, hats and sunscreen.
