KIOSKS TO BE UNVEILED WEDNESDAY
AT 12:30 P.M.
NEWS CONFERENCE
Phoenix, Ariz. – Beginning this week, the
public will get a chance to learn a lot more about the Valley’s light rail
system when informational kiosks are placed along the route. One-of-a-kind
kiosks with information and materials about the Valley’s future METRO light rail
system will revealed to the public beginning Wednesday at a display at Spectrum
Mall. A news conference to unveil
the kiosks will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 4 inside the mall’s
main entrance at Bethany Home Road and 17th Avenue.
The unique, seven-foot-tall structures were designed, built and donated to Valley Metro Rail by local architectural and sign firms as part of a community service project and design competition through the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS. Winning design firms include: Smith Craft, Gould Evans, Circle West Architects, Leo A Daly, Baker Engineering & Energy/All Signs System and s.e.a.d. architecture + construction.
The
kiosks will be on display at the mall through the weekend, then will be placed
at selected locations along the future METRO light rail route beginning August
9. Permanent kiosk locations are
Phoenix Spectrum Mall, the Burton Barr Central Library, Phoenix
Plaza, the Tempe Main Library, the Escalante Community Center in Tempe and the
Mesa Public Library. They
will remain at those locations through light rail construction.

The kiosks are the products of a design competition hosted by Valley Metro Rail and SMPS. Winning design firms include: Smith Craft, Gould Evans, Circle West Architects, Leo A. Daly, Baker Engineering & Energy/All Signs System and s.e.a.d. architecture + construction.
The kiosks include maps and photosimulations of the METRO light rail system, publications, construction information and METRO discount cards for participating businesses along the route.
Valley Metro Rail is a non-profit, public corporation overseeing the design, construction and operation of the light rail system. Major construction on the METRO light rail system is scheduled to begin this fall. The system is scheduled to open in late 2008. § Kiosks are one-of-a-kind, architecturally designed structures up to seven feet tall and weighing up to 300 pounds.
§ Kiosk designs range from a modern chair with integrated brochure racks to an organic rock and metal mesh tower to a plexiglass ribbon representing the shape of the 20-mile route as it winds through the Valley.
